Moving first-generation (SMETS1) smart meters to the energy network

Technology has come a long way since the ‘first-generation’ (SMETS1) smart meters were installed. In the past, not every supplier would be able to access the data on them if you switched providers, and that the meter would lose its smart capabilities.

The great news is that the energy industry is now working together to make the technology used in first-generation smart meters compatible across all suppliers.

Will my current smart meter display be changing?

Once your meter joins the same communications network, you’ll be able to see how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence. And this extra insight helps to give you more control over the energy you use. Some smart meter displays may see their supplier details replaced with the manufacturers’ details.

Will my bills change when my meter joins the national energy network?

If you’re paying a set amount each month with a ‘Budget Plan’, and your smart meter doesn’t currently have smart capabilities, you may see a change. This is because we've been estimating your annual usage based on the readings you send us.

Once your meter becomes smart, we'll receive automatic, accurate readings regularly for your meter – so our Budget Plan review will be more accurate too.

Your bills could go up, down, or stay the same. If you need help, we may be able to arrange a payment plan with you. Call us on 0333 777 0777 and we’ll do our best to help.
