What are smart meters?

Smart meters send us your electricity and gas meter readings automatically, so you no longer have to, through secure wireless networks. This works in the same way as other wireless systems like mobile phones, but you don’t need Wi-Fi or internet access in your home for smart meters to work.

They come with a free smart meter display which shows you how much energy you’re using as you’re using it – so you can use less, and save money. Usage is shown in pounds and pence or kWh (kilowatt hours – the unit used to measure your energy).

Smart meters:

  • Submit meter readings for you – so no more estimates

  • Give you more accurate bills

  • Let you see your energy use on an in-home smart meter display - so you can take control, use less energy and save money

  • Help us move to a smarter, greener nation – lowering our carbon footprint, and enabling new technologies and services

How do I get a smart meter upgrade?

There’s a huge demand for smart meters right now, and we only have so many engineers. We can’t offer everyone an appointment right now.

When our engineers are operating in your area, we’ll send you a message to let you know.

Once you receive an invite from us, book your appointment as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

You can register your interest in smart meters so we know you’re waiting, and can prioritise you when engineers are available in your area.

To register your interest,

. You’ll need to log into your UW account.

Do I have to pay to have smart meter installed?

No – we're installing them for free.

Will you replace both gas and electricity meters with smart meters?

We’ll upgrade any old-style meter as long as the electricity or gas service is with UW, and we’re able to support your meter type. If one of your energy services is with another supplier, they’ll contact you about an upgrade.
